If your professional goal is to work with nationally and internationally renowned faculty, scientists, and engineers, then you should consider joining the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Penn State.  Prospective students may apply for a graduate degree in either the Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering programs.  We offer degrees in the following areas:

Mechanical Engineering
                Masters of Science Degree - The department offers three degree options
                at the master's level:
                        Master of Science Degree - Thesis option
                        Master of Science Degree - Paper option
                        Master of Science Degree - Thesis proposal option
                Doctor of Philosophy Degree

Nuclear Engineering
                Masters of Science Degree - The department offers three degree options
                at the master's level:
                        Master of Engineering
                        Master of Science Degree - Non-thesis option with paper
                        Master of Science Degree - Thesis option
                Doctor of Philosophy Degree

In addition to a first-rate curriculum of graduate courses, there are many opportunities for graduate students to participate in state-of-the-art research projects.  With more than 50 full-time faculty members, numerous research staff, visiting faculty, scientists, and about 250 graduate students, the department provides research opportunities in a wide variety of fields.  The Department also provides a truly exciting and international environment in terms of people and participation in international cooperative educational programs and research projects.  Prospective graduate students from any country are welcome.

The University Park campus is located in the town of State College, near the geographic center of the state of Pennsylvania, where the Appalachian Mountains and rural valleys meet in a predominantly agricultural setting.  The town of State College and surrounding areas contain some of the most beautiful and diverse neighborhoods in all of Pennsylvania.  We enjoy music, art and history, theater, sporting events, shopping, dining and socializing--plenty of cultural and sporting amenities, and a highly educated and diverse population.  Penn State's recreational facilities include Beaver Stadium, the Bryce Jordan Center, swimming pools, tennis and basketball courts, tracks and an indoor ice skating rink.   There are many off campus recreational park areas such as the University-owned Stone Valley Recreation area which has a nature center, a lake with boat rentals, hiking and ski trails, and picnic and camping facilities.  The Centre Region Parks and Recreation operates 33 parks in the area ­ 12 are in State College Borough, four are in College Township, seven are in Ferguson Township, five are in Harris Township and five are in Patton Township.  The Centre Region is often referred to as "Happy Valley" because it truly is an exceptional place to study and learn, to live, to work and raise a family.
