CSE 430W Design Project

Project Title: House Monitoring Simulation System
Project Team:  Brian Bulson, Colby Hamilton, Theo Hunter, Ross Smith
Executive Summary:  Our sponsor, Dr. Dennis Dunn, presented the problem of developing a Building Monitoring System to control and monitor devices located throughout a building.  For our solution, we are developing a graphical software application that runs on a controlling personal computer within a household.  The system allows the user to graphically monitor and control devices throughout their home.  The interface was developed in Visual Basic and employs traditional Microsoft Windows controls  and a tabular navigation system.  The software is designed to communicate via the serial port with the devices and sensors.  The scope of this particular project was to design a functional prototype of the monitoring software that can communicate with the serial port.  For demonstration purposes, we simulate the devices and sensors with another simulation personal computer.  Simulation software is run on the other computer to simulate a functioning household.  The major areas of study included Visual Basic event-driven programming, serial port communication, and software usability.
