SPRING 2002 ME-414 STEAM ENGINE THERMAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Project Sponsor: Department of Mechanical Engineering, Pennsylvania State University
Group Members:

Factulty Sponsor: Professor Savas Yavuzkurt, Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering Dept., Penn State

In 1890, the first ME Department Head, Louis Reber, commissioned the current mechanical engineering students to design and build a working steam engine. It was a featured attraction for the department for decades. However, at some point, it disappeared without a trace. The only remaining documentation of the steam engine are photographs.  As a tribute to Louis Reber, and a reminder of our heritage as mechanical engineers, the ME department at Penn State would like to recreate this engine and permanantly display it in the lobby of the Reber or Leonhard Buildings.
