Kennametal A Team

Insert Handling Improvement - Myford Machine Area Project was sponsored by Kennametal Industries. The objective of the project was to automate the loading and unloading of inserts on the Myford Machine.  The Myford Machine performs a periphery grinding operation on circular inserts and inserts with special geometries.  Automating the loading and unloading of the inserts shall increase productivity and decrease scrap.  Kennametal determined that a large percentage of scrap in the Kenloc inert production line were caused by the inserts coming into contact with one another.  These inserts are highly surface critical because they are sold to various customers internationally where the inserts are used in cutting processes.

The engineering team at The Pennsylvania State University was contracted through The Learning Factory to automate the loading and unloading methods that would eliminate the current bottleneck and operator variability, thereby increasing productivity and reducing the amount of defects in the inserts.
