To determine the multiple forces needed to operate the 3
Cam-Locking Mechanism, a Spring Scale was attached to the
prototype.
Results:
2 lbs of Force Needed to Open/Close the Lid
12 lbs of Force to Un-Lock the Lid
8 lbs of Force to Lock the Lid
5 lbs of Force to Rotate the Sleeve to Lock the Front Cam
onto the Hub
These are desirable results because an average woman can
apply approximately 50 pounds of force, and a male 75 pounds
of force. Therefore, the above force requirements encompass
the majority of potential operators and therefore can be
considered universally compatible.
To determine whether or not the prototype could hold the
required 3 PSI, New Pig was contacted for some support and
the team borrowed their testing fixture. The Cams were
locked, and the prototype immersed in a tub of water. The
fixture was set to 3 PSI using a bike pump and no bubbles
were seen coming from the seal. Therefore, the design will
hold 3 PSI.
