Single Point Release for Dual Buckle Restraint System, Phase II

ARCCA Inc., challenged the members of Single Point Technologies to improve the original design of Five Point Industries and devise a single point release for dual buckle safety restraint for the existing CCOPS seat.

Objectives:
     Utilize a hydraulic system
     Design a fail-safe mode
     Create a means of maintainability
     Implement onto existing CCOPS seat

Previous Design Problems:
Hydraulic lock due to unequal cylinder volumes
     No means of maintainability
Loss of pivot on buckle stalk
     Unusable hydraulic fluid

Design
The design is primarily based on last year's concept, but includes several improvements. Cylinders with equal volumes in each chamber were used to prevent hydraulic lock. A fluid reservoir was added as a means of maintainability, not only for filling the system but for pressurizing the system as well. A check valve was added to ensure that backflow would not hinder normal operating conditions. Pressure relief valves were added for the fail safe mode that in the event that the lines become crimped the system would revert back to a dual button release. With the addition of the pressure relief valves, flexible tubing could be used which aids in the implementation of the system. Flexible tubing also allowed for a larger inner diameter of the tubing. A more structurally stable buckle mount decreased the force losses due to applied torques, which requires less force to depress the safety restraint buckle release. This mount was also attached directly to the button to allow pivot of the buckle stalk. The working fluid in the system was changed from water to a water/antifreeze mix to prevent failure under harsh conditions.
