*Welcome to Team Whirlwind
The Penn State ME Department has requested that a prototype wind turbine be constructed that can be implemented for residential use in central Pennsylvania.  The wind turbine will be designed to supplement an existing power supply in its residential applications, or to charge a 12V battery for the ME 415W competition.

*Objectives
The main objective of this project is to design and build a low maintenance horizontal axis wind turbine to be used in a residential area in central Pennsylvania.  This assembly should be light enough for two men to mount it onto a mast or the top of a building.  The power from the turbine can be used to charge a battery bank, which can be used to power home electronics and other accessories.

There will be a few critical design issues, constraints, and limitations.

  • The design will have to follow local State College zoning ordinances:
    • It can have a maximum height of 35 feet.
    • It cannot produce noise levels over 55 decibels.
    • It cannot block the neighbors view.
  • It will have to be light enough for two average men to lift and setup (max 50 kg).
  • Easy to take down for maintenance.
  • A braking system will be required.
  • The turbine will have to fit into a 26” x 26” x 48” cubic region.
