Summary
The Learning Factory at Penn State will soon be remodeled, and FM cubed has been tasked with
building a historically significant machine to educate others about mechanical engineering.
FM cubed’s machine will also serve as the first of many exhibits to be displayed. The final
model will not only educate but will also be aesthetically pleasing.
Design
The design concept to build a car came from FM cubed’s interest in the gears of Da Vinci’s
paddleboat. The idea is to convert Da Vinci’s gear differential for the paddle boat into an
old fashioned car.
Construction
The Da Vinci car and display case are to be built entirely of black walnut. Detailed planning
and preparation will be required to construct the car on time and under budget. The car will
be carefully finished to ensure its aesthetics. Care will be taken to design and construct
the care with reliability in mind.
