The Penn State Engineering Ambassador program recently hosted 18 universities in a workshop aimed at creating a national network of ambassadors who, through development of their own communication and leadership skills, will enhance the messages middle and high school students receive about engineering careers. The Penn State Engineering Ambassador program is a professional development program for engineering undergraduates with an outreach mission.

One of the spring 2012 capstone design teams presented its final project, improving on a prosthesis allowing bilateral amputees to play recreational sports like golf and tennis, at a “First Swing/Learn to Golf” clinic hosted by the National Amputee Golf Association at the Penn State Golf Course in April.

The Penn State Engineering Ambassadors recently embarked on a new journey -- one that took them across the world to Oslo, Norway. Faculty adviser Melissa Marshall took two ambassadors, bioengineering and mechanical engineering senior Danielle DaSilva and mechanical and nuclear engineering senior Kim Harrison, to Norway in October to hold a weeklong workshop with 11 female students from the University of Oslo.

As soon as they stepped off the plane into Sierra Leone, the travel team of the Engineers Without Borders (EWB)-Penn State group knew only one thing: they had no idea what to expect.

“Everything there is completely different,” said Meghan Fisher, a mechanical engineering junior and president of EWB-Penn State. “There is not a single commercialized structure in the entire country.”

Currently made up of 12 Penn State engineering students, including six from the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering (MNE), the Engineering Ambassadors is an outreach program that visits high schools around Pennsylvania. The ambassadors give short presentations on engineering topics in order to reinforce the principles that students are learning in their classrooms and to encourage the interest of these students in careers in engineering.
