The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) swept the Penn State Regional Rube Goldberg Contest for the fourth year in a row, winning first place overall and the People's Choice Award, on Saturday afternoon at the Nittany Lion Inn Ballroom. In addition to winning a trophy and cash prize, ASME earned the chance to represent Penn State at the national competition held on March 31 at Purdue University.

Students from Penn State won fourth place and brought home a number of other awards at the EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge competition, held in Milford, Mich., and Washington, D.C. Sponsored by General Motors (GM) and the U.S. Department of Energy, the competition challenged university students across North America to re-engineer a GM-donated Saturn VUE, with goals to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while retaining the vehicle’s performance and consumer appeal.

Casey Miller is a senior mechanical engineering major with a passion for politics. From the end of summer until Oct. 6 — the last day for voters to register in Pennsylvania before the 2008 Presidential election — the Penn State student registered about 1,100 people to vote through PSUVote.org, a nonpartisan student coalition.

Classes resumed for the Fall 2008 academic session at Penn State on Monday, August 25. The mechanical engineering program welcomed 279 new undergraduates and 69 new graduate students. The nuclear engineering program welcomed 40 new undergraduates and 7 new graduate students.
