Gary S. Settles is a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University and the Director of the Penn State Gas Dynamics Laboratory since 1983. He received his PhD from Princeton University in Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences in 1976. He is the author of Schlieren and Shadowgraph Techniques (Springer 2001) and over 70 journal publications as listed in Science Citation Index. Gary's expertise is in experimental fluid dynamics, flow visualization, optical flow instrumentation, shock waves, gas dynamics, supersonic flow, convection and plumes, explosive trace detection, homeland security, biofluid dynamics, and particle-laden flows. He has been the advisor to 16 PhD graduates and over 30 masters graduates.
