THERMAL SPRAY FACILITY Our thermal spray facility is a specially-equipped and ventilated chamber where metal coatings are applied to objects and test surfaces by the HVOF (High-Velocity Oxy-Fuel) process. The equipment which applies these coatings is an HP-5000 HVOF sysstem manufactured by Tafa, Inc. The specially designed nozzle has multiple powder injection ports, and the ability to add inert diluent to the oxygen stream feeding the combustion in order to study the effects of independent control of particle velocity and temperature on the morphology of the coating.

| A commercial HD-3070 plasma torch, made by Hypertherm I.c, is included in the Lab's equipment inventory. It is used for research studies on the thermal cutting of sheet metal. High-speed, close-up video imaging of the melt9ing of a steel sheet by a plasma jet has been done with this setup. It provides a unique capability to illustrate thermofluid phenomena in practical applications. | |||
