Gary Settles has been chosen by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as the 2004 Freeman Scholar.

This is one of the major prizes awarded by ASME, given only every second year, to recognize "a person of high capability and considerable experience in the area of fluids engineering." His paper entitled "Sniffers: Fluid-Dynamic Sampling for Olfactory Trace Detection in Nature and Homeland Security---The 2004 Freeman Scholar Lecture" was presented at The 2004 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and R&D Expo in Anaheim, CA, November 2004. It was published in The Journal Of Fluids Engineering, Vol. 127, No. 2, pp. 189-218, 2005.

Gary Settles receives the Tsuyoshi Asanuma Award from the Visualization Society of Japan:

Professor Gary Settles of the Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering Department has received the Tsuyoshi Asanuma Award from the Visualization Society of Japan "in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of flow visualization." Professor Tsuyoshi Asanuma, now retired from the University of Tokyo, established the International Symposium on Flow Visualization in 1977. Although flow visualization is an ancient field, it was due to Professor Asanuma 's initiative that it became established worldwide as a scientific discipline. There have been only two previous recipients of this award, Professor emeritus Wen-Jei Yang of the University of Michigan and Professor emeritus Wolfgang Merzkirch of the University of Essen, Germany. The third Asanuma Award was presented to Professor Settles at the 11th International Symposium on Flow Visualization, held at Notre Dame University August 9-12, 2004. (8/04)
