Four NSF ITR Awards

In September 2000, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced its first grants under the new Information Technology Research (ITR) initiative. The ITR initiative is to help strengthen America 's leadership in a sector that has accounted for one-third of U.S. economic growth in recent years. The strategy to support long-term, high-risk research responds to a challenge from the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC), which called for increased federal investment to maintain the U.S. lead in this important sector of the global economy. We are delighted that we have five faculty who are contributing to this major effort:

•  Timothy Simpson - "Information Management for Product Family Planning and Mass Customization"

•  Qian Wang - "Data-Driven Automatic Performance Modulators for Servers"

•  Kon-Well Wang - "Agent-Based Framework for Active-Passive Hybrid PZT Vibration Control Networks"

•  Michael Modest and Dan Haworth - "Algorithms for Thermal Radiation, Turbulence and Chemical Interactions"
